John Nicholson, Durham, was award the Life Saving Medal in Bronze for gallant conduct displayed at a level crossing in West Hartlepool on 24 August 1901 in rescuing two children from being crushed by a train that was being shunted.

The older child fell on the line pulling a perambulator containing his sister over with her. Nicholson succeeded in dragging them out of danger just as the trucks were upon them.
