The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that St John Ambulance is compliant with all relevant Health and Safety regulations through providing leadership and guidance, ensuring that St John Ambulance continuously develops and implements best practice as a designated competent person. The postholder will deputise for the Director of Quality & Safety as and when necessary and hasdirect line management responsibility of the HSE team.

The postholder will work collaboratively with other Senior Managers and business partners across all networks to deliver an evidence-based Health and Safety strategy to drive continual improvement within the organisations culture regarding Health & Safety.

About You:

  • Significant experience working in a senior - health & safety role
  • Experience of being the ‘responsible/competent person’ for the organisation for HSE
  • Able to analyse and interpret statistical data from multiple conflicting sources to inform decisions
  • Able to translate national strategy and current legislation into workable HSE arrangements
  • Working knowledge of the ISO 4501 standards
  • Ability to establish effective networks internally and externally

About The Role: 

  • Contribute to the development of the Health& Safety improvement plans. Allocate specific targets & objectives to relevant people and to support their delivery of them.
  • Work with the Training team to develop and implemen a fit for purpose Health and Safety training needs analysis plan to improve Health and Safety knowledge and expertise across the organisation.
  • Promote a culture of health & safety awareness amongst all SJA People through focussed campaigns, raising the profile of the function, guiding, and supporting improvement plans developed within the function and elsewhere in the organisation and delivery of suitable training programmes to St John Ambulance People.
  • Develop St John Ambulance Health and Safety strategy in alignment with national regulations to include a robust implementation plan in collaboration with St John People. Ensure Health and Safety policies and processes are reviewed and updated on a regular basis to ensure they reflect changes and improvements relevant legislation and guidance.
  • Chair the Monthly Health and Safety Oversight panel ensuring assurance can be provided on key H&S matters to ELT/ExCO and the Board and to ensure that actions are allocated to designated individuals with allocated completion dates.  Attend other key meetings as the Health and Safety expert
  • Lead, develop and manage the Health & Safety team ensuring that all the team adhere to the current and where appropriate upcoming legislation requirements whilst educating others within the organisation to ensure organisational compliance. Conduct regular 1-2-1’s with those that report to them and develop PDPs for all direct reports. Agree a PDP for self with the DQ&S and complete this against a specified timescale.
