Job Summary

This is a key role within the Internal Communications and Engagement team, informing and engaging our employees and volunteers across the country and helping the delivery of the organisation’s goals. This role will lead on high profile internal communications and engagement projects and campaigns, providing expert advice and support to managers, often at a senior level, so that communications are timely, effective and have impact.

St John Ambulance works at the heart of communities, supporting and enabling them to access and receive physical and mental health first aid. We do this through developing and providing effective community response and outreach services (e.g. Ambulance response & Nighttime Economy) and using our longstanding expertise to empower people with vital clinical skills and the confidence to use them (e.g. our Volunteers and Community Advocates, NHS Cadets and Young Responders programmes). There is also a buoyant social enterprise network which delivers first aid training and supplies medical consumables to businesses and consumers.

About You

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent (Grade C / 4) including Maths & English, minimum 5
  • At least five years’ relevant experience working in Internal Communications and Engagement
  • Proven success in creating and implementing internal communications plans and advising stakeholders
  • Experiencing writing and editing complex material into a corporate style based on principles of plain English
  • Experience of working in a large organisation with a dispersed workforce
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Ability to influence stakeholders across the organisation including senior managers
  • Ability to develop detailed internal communications and engagement campaigns based around clear organisational objectives

     

About the Role

  • Work with the Internal Communications and Engagement Partner to deliver the charity’s internal communications strategy as part of the Culture plan, ensuring messages, tactics and channels meet the organisation’s aims, and employee and volunteer needs.
  • Lead on providing expert internal communications advice and support for senior managers and teams for a wide range of projects and campaigns, as well as business as usual activities, creating and advising on communication plans, use of relevant channels, and development of key messages, to help ensure a successful outcome.
  • Lead on a number of high profile projects, liaising with People Partners, which are significant for the organisation (e.g. internal surveys).
  • Identify and implement ways to educate leaders and teams so they can run their own effective communications, using relevant tools and channels.
  • Ensure a strategic approach, helping to develop plans that are joined up, timely and address longer term requirements.
  • Have a good knowledge and experience of working with a wide range of internal communication channels, including the intranet, bulletins, social media and newsletters.
  • Ensure every piece of work can be measured and evaluated so effectiveness can be analysed and help shape and improve future communications.
  • Lead on providing internal communications support for crises and adverse incidents, as delegated by the Internal Communications and Engagement Partner, working closely with senior managers, the External Communications team and People and Culture colleagues as necessary.
