Course description

The Mental Health Awareness course enhances the learners’ understanding of what mental ill-health is, summarising common mental health conditions and potential risk and protective factors.

This course demonstrates how to communicate in an empathetic manner and allows the learners to put this into practice with a realistic case study.

Course duration

3 hours.

Topics covered

This course will enhance a learner’s knowledge of mental health/ill-health through trainer led discussion, activities and a case study.

Specifically, this course will cover:

  • What is meant by mental health and mental ill-health
  • Common mental illnesses
  • The importance of empathy when communicating with a person experiencing mental ill-health
  • Stigma and the effect it has on mental health
  • Support for people experiencing mental ill-health
  • The benefits of a positive mental health culture

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at learners who have not completed previous mental health training but wish to enhance their knowledge of mental health. 

Please be aware that this course focuses on employees in the workplace and covers subjects that some people may find distressing. If a delegate feels overwhelmed they can leave the course at any time.

However, if you feel in advance that this subject may be too distressing for the delegate please do not book them on without first asking them whether they would feel comfortable attending. If the delegate is unsure whether this topic is suitable for them, please encourage them to contact us to discuss their concerns. Delegates aged 18 or older can attend this course. Delegates aged 16 and 17 can attend this course with the written consent of a parent or guardian.

Candidates need a basic command of English (defined as Level 2). While we are often able to provide support to people who do not have English as a first language, our ability to do so is limited by the time available and the number of people who require assistance. We may be able to make special arrangements if requested in advance. Please contact us if you need any guidance.

Assessment and certification

Assessment

There is no formal assessment for this course but delegates must complete all sections of the course.

Certification

After completion of the course, delegates will receive their certificate from St John Ambulance.
