Available roles

St John Ambulance is preparing some new clinical roles for the future of our charity. We've wound down recruitment for our previous clinical roles (like First Aider or Hospital Care Volunteer) while we get ready.

If you are already qualified and have a relevant Healthcare Professional registration, you can still join us and offer your professional skills as a volunteer.

The availability of clinical roles may vary depending on where you live. You can use this page to find what's available in your area, and start your application.

You will be able to participate in our future clinical roles when they are available, if you commit to volunteering in another role in the meantime. If you do not want a different role, then keep an eye on our website or follow us on social media to find out when recruitment for these roles opens.

Event First Aider

Event First Aider is our current main role for volunteers delivering first aid to the public. Unfortunately, it is unlikely to be available in your area while we get ready for the exciting roles that will replace it. This may change if there is a particular event or community activity in your area where our existing volunteers need more support. If you're interested in learning first aid informally as a volunteer, then you can do this as part of your local unit if you commit to volunteering in another role.

Emergency Ambulance Crew

The role of Emergency Ambulance Crew may become available in some areas. It's important to be aware that this is a very demanding voluntary role. To pursue this role successfully you'll need to have existing experience of clinical delivery (employed or voluntary), have qualifications in English & Maths, be able to pass a fitness assessment and attend a series of interviews. This process can take a few months and will be followed by a six-month training programme. The ongoing time commitment after qualification is 20+ hours a month.

This role is highly rewarding, but its demands should not be underestimated!

Other roles

The roles that remain open for recruitment everywhere are as follows. You can find more information here.

Operational Healthcare Professional

Volunteer on events and our other operational opportunities if you have one of the following registrations:

  • GMC registered doctor (FY2 or equivalent or higher)
  • NMC registered nurse
  • HCPC registered paramedic
  • HCPC registered ODP (with relevant PHEM experience)
  • NMC registered nursing associate (with relevant PHEM experience)
  • PAMVR registered physician assistant (with relevant PHEM experience)

Youth Team (including Duke of Edinburgh's Award Leader)

Volunteer with young people aged 5-10, 11-17, or both, helping them to gain skills and support their community. Or by supporting our Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme, help 13–25-year-olds with adventurous activities.

Logistics

A role where you become the specialist in ensuring St John people have the right equipment, in the right place and at the right time.

Fundraising

Engage the public in a variety of ways to understand how their donations save lives and enable them to donate to us.
