Based in First Aid Societies at universities up and down the country, St John Ambulance is home to hundreds of amazing Student Volunteers - all doing their part to share life-saving skills and knowledge with their community.
First Aiders, Fundraisers, Hospital Volunteers, Ambulance Crew, Trainers, Logistics Support, Cycle Responders and more - there’s so many ways that our Student Volunteers get involved, and they make a massive contribution to the charity on every level.

It’s not just about knowing how to put your mate into the recovery position on a night out. You’ll get to learn all kinds of valuable skills, such as how to perform CPR, how to help someone who is choking, or how to treat a burn. First Aid Societies often host external speakers or partner with other societies on topics such as Mental Health, Sign Language or Casualty Simulation.
First Aid Societies are a great way to take a break from your studies and meet new people, including a network of Student Volunteers across the country. Our First Aid Societies run some pretty fantastic social events and activities for their members too!
There are also lots of opportunities to enhance your CV by improving your teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. For example, you could get involved with fundraising for St John Ambulance, assist with a local Badger or Cadet unit, become a trainer or demonstrator, or sit on the committee and play your part in the running of your First Aid Society.

Once you’re part of a First Aid Society and interested in putting your skills into practice, you can become a volunteer! We have hundreds of opportunities available, in a wide variety of roles. You could be keeping the crowd safe at football matches as a First Aider, supporting your local Emergency Department as a Hospital Care Volunteer, keeping the charity moving as a Logistics Volunteer, supporting the next generation of life-savers as a Youth Leader, and more!
You can join a First Aid Society through your Students’ Union or Guild of Students. Check our list of Student Volunteering Units, then keep an eye out for the First Aid Society stand at your Freshers Fair! And if your university doesn’t have a First Aid Society yet, you can always set up your own.
